Origins of the Lusby name
English: habitational name from Lusby in Lincolnshire, named in Old Norse as
‘Lútr’s farmstead or settlement’, from the Old Norse personal name Lútr (also a
nickname meaning ‘stooping’) + býr ‘farmstead’, ‘settlement’.

Overview
I am Interested in learning more about the family history  of  LUSBY  family groups  in
the East Riding of Yorkshire and north Lincolnshire.
 The Yorkshire Lusbys in my
family tree were located in Kingston-upon- Hull, Tickton and New Ellerby in the East
Riding of Yorkshire. My Lusby ancestors were connected to families such as
JACKSON of Arnold , MYERS of Leven.
Charles Lusby
Great grandfather Charles Lusby
Charles Lusby's origins are a bit of a mystery to
me and the only clues are in  the 1891 Census
where he was living in West St Leven in the
household of Mary Ann Dennison. In the 1891
census he claimed he had been born in Gt
Grimsby c. 1867 and in his 1892 Marriage
Certificate that his deceased father had been a
sea-captain. This information seems to contradict
other clues left in a family bible.
Charles married Elizabeth
MYERS on 14 January
1892 in the Primitive Methodist Chapel, Beverley.
He died on 31 March 1945 and is buried in the
Parish Church of Swine.
Charles and Elizabeth had two children,
Herbert
LUSBY (1894-1984) and Charles Ernest LUSBY.

  • 1901 Census Leven Carr and Heigholme: Charles LUSBY born Hull c 1867 is
living as a shepherd(?) in the household of (Heigholme Farm) of Robert
RICHARDSON, farm manager. Elizabeth LUSBY (nee MYERS) my great-
grandmother is living with her two sons Charles Ernest and Herbert (my
grandfather) at Weedland in Hempholme, Leven along with David DUNN, a
    boarder aged 4.
  • 1894 Birth Certificate for Herbert LUSBY: Charles LUSBY was a farm foreman
    living in Tickton.
  • April 1892 Birth Certificate for Charles Ernest LUSBY: Charles LUSBY was a
    farm labourer living in Leven.
  • January 1892 Marriage Certificate for Charles LUSBY and Elizabeth MYERS:
Charles LUSBY b 1868 was a farm labourer living in Leven, son of George
    LUSBY, deceased Sea Captain.
  • 1891 Census Leven: Charles LUSBY an Agricultural Labourer born c.1867
Grimsby, Lincolnshire was living in the household of Mary Ann DENNISON,
farmer on the same street at the MYERS family.
  • 1881 Census:  Charles LUSBY  Farm Servant born c. 1867 Beverley Yorkshire
living in household of John Pocklington, Farmer of Cold Harbour Farm
    Bishopsburton
  • 1871 Census Beverley: Charles LUSBY born c. 1865 Hull was a nursechild
living in Lairgate in the household of William WOOLLOCK, agricultural
labourer, b. abt 1840, Beverley and his family.
  • 13 June 1865 Birth Certificate: Charles LUSBY was born to Annie LUSBY of 5
Hall Street, Myton Hull . No father was recorded.
My hunch is that my great great grandmother was Sarah Ann Lusby 1843 Drypool
daughter of John LUSBY and Sarah ROSENDALE. John was a Master Seaman.
because:
  • her sister Elizabeth lived in 8 Hall St in 1851 with her aunt and uncle,
    Rosendales.
  • Sarah Ann did not marry and went to live with her other sister and brother-in-
    law, Emma and Richard Todd.
  • Richard Todd's parents were connected to Lusbys as they fostered Frances
    Lusby. a nurse-child, in 1851
All circumstantial evidence of a link with the Charles Lusby born 1865 to Annie Lusby
5 Hall St !
A
set of photographs show my great-great grandparents but have been labelled
indicating that they are LUSBY rather than MYERS. Any help in identifying them would
be appreciated and determine if the elderly couple are Charles' parents or in-laws.
