O'KELLY (Gaelic: O Ceallaigh) means 'Descendent of
Ceallach' (war or contention), .
O'KELLY was chief of the
great Ui Maine clan and ruled over an extensive territory in
the counties of Galway and Roscommon.  The "O" was
dropped during the 16-17 centuries and the name became
Kelly.
The O'Kellys of Derry were Lords of Cineal Eachdhaca an
Chodaigh. This family were descended from Eochaidh son
of Eoghan, son of Niall of the Nine Hostages. They
originated in the Barony of Loughlinsholin, in south Co.
