The Kelly Family in Belfast got caught up in the
Troubles of the 1920s. Below are reports of the
tragic events of Wednesday 24th November
1921.
“Not so fortunate was John Kelly who owned a
spirit grocery in Ohio Street, off the Crumlin
Road. A single gunman entered his shop, which
had been attacked several times previously and
opened fire on Mr. Kelly who was talking to
Thomas Thompson, also of Ohio Street. The
latter, a member of the Orange and Masonic
Orders, went to the aid of Kelly and was fatally
wounded for his efforts. John Kelly’s son,
Eugene, who was in the store, also received
fatal injuries (he died in hospital the next day).
This was a rare example of cross-community
help and common suffering.”
